Oulphyllia is a genus of large polyped stoney coral found in Australia. I like to refer to it as “large format Platygyra”, for obvious reasons. Oulphyllia will spend the day rigid & photosynthesizing, but spends the majority of the night time hours opens up, releasing long feelers out from the crevices of its structure to seek out particulate food to consume. We find these feelers to be fairly peaceful, not seeking out turf wars with near by corals in our experience, though extremely close proximity could result in some damage.

The Coral encrusts and has a tenancy to build more height than many encrusts, as it pushes to grow almost like a half basketball.

On Import it always seems that we have all identical phenotypes, each a bland minty green tone, but within a few months of conditioning, we start to see more color fill in.

Once a Colony is well conditioned, and has been growing steadily in captivity, we find them to frag very well, with little to no risk of loss while cutting up pieces, though we always look to make 2″+ fragments, versus the smaller 1″ frags we cut on smaller format coral. Frags are made using a diamond coated wet bandsaw.
